POSTOPERATIVE CARE

You must fast (no food or water for 6 hours after the operation. Patients are usually discharged between 12 to 24 hours after the operation, and after the evaluation of Dr. Natalio Cruz. However, certain cases are recommended to wait up to 48 hours before leaving the clinic, such as patients who are diabetic.

You can restart your sexual life after 4 or 5 weeks, during which you have taken analgesic and healing treatments.

Only following strict control over your habits during the postoperative period can we guarantee a total recovery of the patient after the operation.

Care and adaptation

One of the biggest setbacks associated with the prosthesis implant is infection, which means it needs to be removed. However, the risk is minimal, practically nonexistent in ASM and Coloplast prostheses.
ASM prostheses have the Inhibizone impregnation system, so they include an antibiotic bath. Coloplast has a hydrophilic material, which allows the surgeon to bathe the prosthesis in a physiological solution with the antibiotic he chooses.

All this, in addition to a decalogue of preoperative preventive actions, are the reason why infections intraoperative and postoperative are minimal.

Unlike prostheses in other parts of the human body, there is no rejection of the penile prosthesis. It is crucial to have a quiet life for two weeks after the surgery. Avoid any kind of stress and eat healthy.

It is crucial to have a quiet life for two weeks after the surgery. Avoid any kind of stress and eat healthy.
It’s important to keep the penis tucked touching the belly for the first weeks for correct lymphatic drainage and to prevent inflammation.

Follow up:

Please, avoid wearing jeans and tight clothes for the first few months. You must also attend every appointment with Dr. Natalio Cruz, normally around 8 to 15 days after the implantation, as well as a month to 45 days after the implantation, depending on the personal state of each patient their evolution.
If the patient feels any pain several weeks after the surgery, he can choose between several ways to alleviate it. During the process of regeneration and healing, scrotal supports are usually very effective if you want to avoid taking painkillers.

Feel free to ask us any questions about the adaptation process. Please note that there are always some tricks and tips that can make this recovery process much easier.

Healing the wounds:

You must always keep the bandage clean and dry. Once you’re allowed to have a bath, you must change the bandage and use a new one. You can wash the wounds carefully using water and soap.

Siguiendo estas indicaciones y recomendaciones la vida sexual del paciente mejorará enormemente

THE INTERVENTION

There are several implantation techniques as well as different accesses to the place where the prosthesis will be placed. We’ll choose one or another attending to the individual characteristics of every patient. The surgical intervention normally lasts one hour, and we use local anesthesia under sedation.

Dr. Natalio Cruz (The prestigious Dr. Natalio Cruz, National Coordinator of Andrology of the Spanish Association of Urology and Head of Medical Services of Andromedi) always leads the intervention himself. He makes one or more cuts in the tissue in order to introduce the penile implant. This cut can be made in the lower part of the penis, next to the abdomen or between the penis and the scrotum.

As we have previously said, in our clinic, we prevent infections by fulfilling a decalogue of preventive actions that guarantee excellent and high levels of security.

Previous care of cutaneous surface attached to the intervention area shaving at the very moment of the intervention, in the operating room, with specific tools

  • per-intervention antibiotic prophylaxis
  • deep surgical wash
  • all staff use double gloves.
  • limited access to the operating room
  • we dispense with unnecesary tools (as urethral catheters)
  • specific post-intervention treatment
  • local antibiotic treatment of the prostheses (rifampicin)
  • exclusive use of prostheses such as Coloplast Titán or AMS 700, treated with inhibiZone (hydrophilic and antibiotic)

Secondary surgeries or reconstruction surgeries, that is to say, interventions for patients that come from other centers that need to replace or remove their prostheses, have breakages as the most usual complications such as distal perforations, infections, fibrosis, complications after priapism, etc. In these cases, we usually use the sub-pubic or sub-coronal.

It’s important to say that less than 2% of the cases present any problem, which means that the increases in quality and safety standards have reduced considerably the setbacks.

The postoperative care after penile prosthesis surgery does not require any special care except standard rest and curing of the surgical wound. Patients can leave the clinic after 24 hours except in those cases that present a specific risk factor. In these cases, we recommend that they stay between 24 to 48 hours.

After four or five weeks of adapting to the implant and after a medical visit to check the proper activation and deactivation of the penile prosthesis, you can reactivate your sexual life.

ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

¿What is erectile dysfunction or impotence?

It’s the difficulty or incapacity to get or maintain an erection long and rigid enough to have satisfactory sexual activity.

The penis is composed of, among other parts, by cavernous bodies which, once they are filled with blood after sexual excitement, it increases its size and gets hard enough to make penetration possible during sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction is caused by a lack of blood flow in this area.

Erectile dysfunction can be caused by organic, neurologic, endocrinological, vascular or psychological problems, as well as by associated diseases such as diabetes.

What causes erectile dysfunction?

The most common causes of erectile dysfunction or impotence are:

  • Age
  • Severe diabetes
  • High cholesterol and triglycerides
  • High blood pressure and hypertension
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Prostatitis
  • Accidents and injuries
  • High stress (both professional and personal)
  • People who have had radical surgery after prostate cancer (radical prostatectomy), colon cancer or spinal injuries.
  • Excessive use of tobacco, hard drugs, and alcohol
  • Mental blocks due to fear of rejection or other traumas, etc.

We recommend penile prosthesis at first instance only to patients with very specific profiles, such as patients with very severe diabetes, or people who have had radical prostatectomy. They are patients who no longer respond at all to sexual therapy or pharmacotherapy to fight impotence.

It’s very important that the patient himself is aware of the causes of his erectile dysfunction. If he has bad eating habits, he abuses alcohol, cigarettes or drugs, or he suffers from a high level of stress, the patient himself must consider a vital change and take a first step to solve this situation.

RECOVER YOUR SEXUAL LIFE

You can restart your sexual life between 3 to 6 weeks after the penile implant.

As you can see, men with this treatment have better self esteem. Because of an improvement of their sexual life, they even smile more and look happier.

There is a whole period of adaptation to get used to manipulating the prostheses and to not being afraid of your sexual partner noticing the prosthesis, or not being afraid of feeling any pain while having sex. You will find the answers to the most frequent questions in our section.

¿Como funciona la protesis de pene?

The advantage of the penile implant is that it solves definitively the impotence problem. It has a long, useful life, and the more you use it, the better it works because it keeps the implant mechanism in proper working order.

Once the patient has passed these obstacles, they see there is no pain and there is no way to notice the prosthesis, and they get used to the implant so it stops being a taboo in their lives.

RESULTS

The results will be, without a doubt, extremely satisfactory. Almost 100% of the patients in these kind of treatments can start to have full and frequent sexual relations. As some patients have explained to us, this treatment has “changed their lives.”

Years of experience are the reason why there are practically no appreciable decreases in penis length, except in those cases wherein by nature of the specific characteristics of the case, there is a shortening. In this type of case, we offer the possibility to combine the intervention with a penis enlargement, to gain between 1 and 1.5 cm approximately (*).

You may expect to see some pictures of the results, but there is no difference between a normal penis and a penis with a prostheses, since there is no visual evidence of the implant, so that’s why you won’t find those pictures here.  If the prostheses is too short and the cylinders are in the body of the penis instead of in the glands, there can be an aesthetic problem called “floppy head” (a slight curvature in the head of the penis, especially when it’s flaccid, but not only) and that must be solved. It doesn’t affect the sexual practice at all, but it’s a synonym of a bad indication.

Penile prosthesis do not affect ejaculation or the possibility to have an orgasm. However, hardness, vigor and rigidity are guaranteed by the prosthesis.

These treatments are routine in Andromedi Clinics because of our extensive experience in Spain, Europe, the United States and the Middle East. If you have severe erectile dysfunction and you haven’t found a solution with Levitra, Viagra or Cialis, nor through other treatments like shock waves or psychotherapy, please ask for an appointment with Dr. Natalio Cruz.

After years trying different treatments, many patients are satisfied with their penile implant. They will never feel embarrassed or frustrated while engaging in sexual activity. This is Diego’s testimony after his intervention on July 2017:

I am writing in this forum to share my experience three months after the prosthesis implant. I feel frankly really well. The implant is marvelous It has given me back happiness and the ease of a fundamental part of my life. I still have some discomfort, but they are nothing compared to the possibilities that I now have. I feel young again. In my case, the first 15 days have been painful, but I hardly took any anti-inflammatory medicine due to a digestive problema. Little by little the  pain disappeared.

Perhaps I should have gotten more information about the pain and discomfort that could occur because I was taken a little bit by surprise. In any case, the pain has disappeared and there is no more discomfort.

The first time I tried to actívate and disactivate the implant, it seemed a little bit difficult, but after a clear explanation, I learned quickly that it really is comfortable and easy. It’s always ready. My penis works perfectly. My body responds to my sexual needs. There is no difference with my sexual activities from before I needed the implant. I want to thank Dr. Natalio Cruz for his fantastic work. I know I have phoned him more times that I had wished, but that was because I didn’t expect these sensations.

I would recommend this intervention 100%, even when, as it was in my case, the dysfunction is partial. I wish I made this decision two years ago and who knows if I could have lived a romantic story earlier. My intimate life has changed completely and my social life too. This intervention has made me a much happier person.

If you want to contact me to ask any questions about my case, this is my email: freethinker967@gmail.com (Diego)

I hope Dr. Natalio Cruz keeps making people happy for many years.

Thank you very much.
